Trend Alert: Stacked vs. Staggered Tile?

Things are moving so fast on Willow Glen Way that I can barely keep up. Tile in all 3 bathrooms went up beautifully (see last blog for details). That being said, I am a bit stuck about what to do on the kitchen backsplash. And, guess what?

So, what’s the difference?

On the left (above), we’ll see stacked subway tile. On the right, traditionally laid tile. Otherwise known as Running Bond or Brick Pattern. Image source: 1. 2.

Let’s ask the experts

It’s funny because I have really been struggling with this for the last few weeks. My aesthetic for this new house is sort of eclectic - mostly traditional but with flairs of modern throughout. Which makes it even harder. When we renovate homes, we are rigorous about trying to follow the vibe of the house and not depart hugely. In this case, we have a bit more flexibility.

I also really don’t want to design something that you can look back and say “that was so 2019”. So here’s the real question:

IS STACKED TILE HERE TO STAY?

In pondering this question, I searched the Worldwide Web. Low and behold, Emily Henderson, renowned interior designer extraordinaire has also been struggling and did a whole blog about it. Check it out here. There is a wealth of knowledge plus she does really cool shit.

Historically speaking

Well, not really historically but IMHO brick-laid type tends to align with a farm house. A classic, traditional, cozy house. Stacked type came into vogue in the 60’s during the whole mid-century modern movement. Excuse the shameless plug. But, if you haven’t seen the MGM house we did, check it out here.

Let’s look at more pictures, shall we?
